An expired certificate is never a small problem
Certificates fail loudly. An expired TLS certificate takes your site down with a browser warning your customers screenshot. A lapsed calibration certificate invalidates every measurement your lab produced since it expired. An out-of-date ISO certificate surfaces mid-audit, in front of the client you least wanted to explain it to. The renewal itself is usually cheap and quick — the damage comes entirely from the surprise.
Most teams track certificates in the worst possible place: the inbox of whoever bought them. That person changes roles, the registrar's renewal notice goes to a dead mailbox, and the first anyone hears of it is the outage. A shared spreadsheet is barely better — nobody is assigned to look at it, so nobody does.

How Signal handles it
- Reminder schedules. Certificates need long lead times. Set offsets like 90, 60, and 30 days, and add a daily repeat for the final week so nothing coasts to zero.
- Multiple recipients. Notify the engineer who renews it and the manager who owns the risk. If one is on leave, the other still gets the email.
- Renewal tracking. When a certificate is renewed, log the new expiry in one action. Signal reschedules future reminders and keeps the renewal history.
- Audit log. Every sent reminder and acknowledgement is recorded — useful evidence when compliance asks how expiries are controlled.
Frequently asked questions
Does Signal monitor certificates automatically?
Signal is deliberately simple: you enter the expiry date (or import it via CSV) and Signal guarantees the reminders. There's no agent to install and nothing to break — it works for SSL certs and paper certificates alike.
